The champagne flowed at the 2007 Symphony Ball as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra transported patrons to "La Vie en Rose"—a time when Edith Piaf dominated the cabarets and Paris emerged as the City of Light. Chaired by Victoria Palefsky, the Symphony Ball was held on November 17, 2007 at the InterContinental Hotel Buckhead and honored Norman Mackenzie, the ASO Director of Choruses. Mackenzie and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performed selections from La Bohème as part of the evening’s festivities.
A valued ASO supporter, Delta Air Lines returned as the leading Phoenix sponsor of the Symphony Ball, benefiting the ASO's Learning Community education and community programs.
Selected in 2000 to continue the tradition of excellence set by Robert Shaw, ASO Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie was honored for his brilliant leadership and creative vision, which have led the ASO Chorus and soloists to garner five Grammy Awards©
One of Atlanta's most anticipated events of the year, the evening began in the height of grandeur at the InterContinental Hotel Buckhead. Sanders Hulsey and Kim Vasil of Tony Conway's A Legendary Event recreated a charming Paris street scene as the backdrop for a cocktail reception, and guests were then escorted to a ballroom transformed into a lush Parisian cabaret, adorned with over 7,000 flowers, for a performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Tenor Dimitri Pittas and soprano Lisa Daltirus accompanied the Orchestra in selections from La Bohème and Edith Piaf. After dinner of French delicacies, patrons had the opportunity to bid on luxury items in a live auction, including a trip to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The evening concluded with dancing to the stunning nine-piece band Bobby & the Aristocats.
The event raised over $540,000 benefiting the ASO's Learning Community programs, including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Talent Development Program. These two initiatives have created a lasting impact by creating professional opportunities for a diverse group of young Atlanta-area musicians. Proceeds also supported several ambitious community engagement partnerships with local institutions that have enabled ASO musicians to regularly reach and teach area children about the value and joy of music.
