~Alumni Biographies~
Violin
Dale Cheng is a rising junior at Princeton University where he is majoring in mathematics. He continues to practice regularly and travels to New York for biweekly lessons.
Dina Chou is currently a senior at Emory University, majoring in Psychology on the Pre-med track, and is working in a lab to study cognition of non-human primates.
Peter Hill is currently in the UGA Honors Program and loves it. He is majoring in ecology and minoring in music. He studies violin with Dr. Heald and performs in the UGA Symphony Orchestra and loves it too!
Adam von Housen currently attends Kennesaw State Universit where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance under the teachings of Helen Kim.
Emily Laminack graduated from Reinhardt College with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance. She currently teaches both violin and piano and freelances in the Atlanta area.
Amanda Watson received her Bachelor’s in business from University of North Texas in 2005. She is currently teaching private lessons in Buckhead and Woodstock. She performs regularly with the Classy Chicks Trio and freelances with bands and churches around Atlanta.
Katie Zhang graduated with high honors from Georgia Tech in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. She currently works as a healthcare consultant with Stockamp & Associates and splits her time between Atlanta and Dallas.
Viola
Drew Forde will be attending the Franklin Pond Chamber Music Program this summer, and the following season, he will be the violist for the Phoenix Quartet, associated with the ASO Talent Development Program. I looks forward to working with younger children through the community engagement program.
Melissa Gross is entering her second year as a viola performance major at Indiana University. She is also pursuing gender studies and a minor in French. She studies viola with Alan De Veritch.
Stephanie Kauten received a Bachelor in Music from Vanderbilt University and Masters of Music from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. In the fall of 2008, Stephanie will begin studying law at Temple University Law School in Philadelphia, PA.
Heather Lofdahl is currently working toward degrees in Music Education and Viola Performance at Augustana College in Illinois. In a couple of years, she hopes to teach music in the public school system.
Cello
Jessica Dumas-Kornhoff graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance in 2004, and has studied with Daniel Laufer, Wolfgang Laufer, Nan Maddox, and Martha Gerschefski. She is currently playing in the Cobb Symphony Orchestra and preparing for Graduate School auditions. She currently resides in Dallas, GA with my husband, Mathew and two children, Taylor and Claire.
Double Bass
Kyle Blond just finished a four-year career with the ASYO. He recently graduated from Pope High School in Marietta and will attend Georgia Tech this year on an Air Force ROTC Scholarship. He plans to keep playing bass as a hobby and for gigs.
Lauren McCombe (Maiden name: Cauthorn) just finished her Masters of Music Performance on Double Bass at Valdosta State University in May 2008, studying with Dr. Donovan Stokes and Mr. Bret Alford. While working on her masters, as well as during her undergraduate work in music education and music theory at UGA, she taught in the strings project and privately and she was the head librarian for the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. For the last two years, she has been an active member of the Central Florida Symphony Orchestra and Valdosta Symphony Orchestra as well as substituting in the Albany Symphony Orchestra And Columbus State Symphony Orchestra.
Flute/Piccolo
Ashley Mraz Brokovich graduated in 2006 from University of Cincinnati- College-Conservatory of Music, majoring in Music Education and Flute Performance. She teaches Pre K - 3rd grade music at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Atlanta. Ashley continues to teach private lessons, and she is a member of the Atlanta Wind Symphony.
Peggy Chatfield (Maiden Name: Pitts) has been a member of Tara Winds for the last 15 years and currently holds the position of principal flute. She teaches private flute lessons, plays in church and is the song leader during worship services. She is also a bankruptcy paralegal.
Judith Gilbert graduated from University of Georgia with a bachelor of Music in flute performance in May 2007. She was in England from Sep. 2007 to Apr. 2008 where she studied with Trevor Wye. This Fall she will begin a Master of Music degree program in flute performance with an assistantship at Western Carolina University.
Jenna Pendergast lives in Lawrenceville, GA, and just finished a year of teaching Georgia Pre-K. She plays in the Atlanta Wind Ensemble which rehearses in Roswell, GA.
Oboe/English Horn
Danielle Marine is currently teaching oboe lessons and private swim lessons and coaching the neighborhood swim team. She is also involved with leading FSU orientations. Go Seminoles!
Allison Robinson is currently an Oboe Performance Major at Furman University where she studies with Petrea Warneck.
Bassoon
Chandler Stuart is currently a Quality Assurance Manager with Delta Air Lines in the Technical Operations Division. He graduated from Ga. State University in 1991 with a BA in Bassoon Performance. He actively plays in Tara Winds, a community wind ensemble consisting of 85 adults from around Georgia. He played with the ASYO in 1982-83.
Clarinet
Amanda James is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Instrumental Music Education Degree at Indiana University. She is the President of the Indiana University Music Educators National Conference (MENC)
Trayon C. Spivey-Hall is a Master Clarinet Clinician/Performer who teaches and resides in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. He has his own private clarinet studio and ensemble called the T.T. Spivey-hall “ConcertMasters.” This group has performed at Phillips Arena, the SoSo Def Baseball Tournament, the HBCU band Director’s Consortium National Convention, and they will perform at the VH1 Save the Music Battle of the Bands in Los Angeles, California in December 2008.
Horn
Anna Dodd has recently graduated from The Juilliard School with a BM in Horn Performance and is now entering the New England Conservatory as a graduate student. During the last few years, she has played frequent concerts with the Conservatory Brass and Empire Wind Quintet. While at Juilliard, she studied with Julie Landsman, Phil Myers, Jerome Ashby, and Jennifer Montone.
After graduating from Indiana University in December 2001 with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, Julie Gerhardt taught middle school band for five years in Kennesaw, Georgia. She has now completed one year of a masters degree in music performance at the University of Georgia, and she will be transferring to the University of New Hampshire in the fall.
Matt Manley will be attending Columbus State this fall to major in music performance at the Schwob School of Music. He will be participating in the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee for four days in June.
Trumpet
James Brunone is in his 3rd year at Georgia Tech as a Mechanical Engineering student. Currently, he is working for an industrial robotics company and playing trumpet as much as he can. He has played in the GT Symphony Orchestra for 2 years, and he continues to play with the Atlanta Trumpet Ensemble.
Tamara Dworetz is pursuing a Bachelors of Music Education for Winds and Strings at Indiana University. She is interning this summer with Melanie Darby in the ASO’s Learning Community department.
Trombone
Jonathan Beard is a rising sophomore at the prestigious Juilliard School. He is pursuing a degree in Classical trombone performance and studies with world renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi.
Since graduating from high school and the ASYO in 1999, Thomas Paris has pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Rochester before embarking on a successful career inreal estate development. In the fall of 2007, he returned to school and is completing his BA at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with Honors.
Percussion
Kelsey Adams received a full tuition music scholarship to Columbus State University where she plans to major in music education and minor in sociology.
Michael Collins currently works as the print music buyer for Ken Stanton Music, Inc., plays percussion at Transfiguration Catholic Church and arranges music for percussion, vocal and small wind band ensembles. He has performed with the following ensembles: Lanier Symphony, Staten Island Symphony, Atlanta Community Orchestra, Macon Symphony, Gwinnett Orchestra, Atlanta Brass Band, Cobb Wind Symphony, Atlanta Wind Symphony and Atlanta Concert Band. He has taught at many public schools (Lumpkin Co. HS, Gainesville HS, Fayette Co. HS, Poly Prep Country Day School (Brooklyn), Wagner College (Staten Island) and Marietta MS) and at several summer music programs (Georgia HS Music Workshop, University of Maine Summer Music Program, and FSU Summer Music Program).
Jessie Lederman will be attending Columbus State University this fall where she will major in music performance.
