Ralph Jones joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1970 and has served as Principal Bass since 1977. At ASO Family Concerts in 1994, he was soloist in Jack and the Beanstalk, a double-bass concerto by Jon Deak. He has played in the Pittsburgh Symphony, Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Tulsa Philharmonic (Principal Bass), and Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich. For several years he taught privately and played Principal Bass at the Chautauqua Institute.
Born in Decatur, Illinois, Mr. Jones graduated from the University of Tulsa. His teachers were Henry Loew, Principal Bass with the Saint Louis Symphony; Lew Norton, bassist with the New York Philharmonic; Anthony Bianco, Principal Bass with the Pittsburgh Symphony; and Paul Rainier-Zepperitz, Principal Bass with the Berlin Philharmonic. He plays on an instrument made in 1740 by Domenicus Busan.
Mr. Jones maintains a busy teaching studio and is active in the ASO Talent Development Program and outreach programs. Many of his students have been accepted into schools such as Juilliard, Manhattan, Indiana University, and the Curtis Institute. He has given master classes at a number of universities, including Northwestern, Indiana, Georgia, and the Manhattan School of Music.
A frequent guest artist of the Georgian Chambers Players, Mr. Jones performed the Rossini Duo for cello and bass last year with ASO Principal Cellist Christopher Rex. Most recently he performed in a chamber version of Richard Strauss?s Till Eulenspiegel. Both performances were at Spivey Hall.
He is married to Gloria Jones, Associate Principal Bassist with the ASO, and they have two young children, Christopher, 13, and 3-year-old Shelley.
