Named “Newcomer of the Year” by London’s Daily Telegraph, Andrew Foster-Williams is a bass-baritone much admired for his vocal agility and richness of tone. The British-born singer studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was recently made an Associate.  This week’s concerts constitute his ASO debut.

Mr. Foster-Williams’s operatic engagements have included roles in Don Giovanni, The Thieving Magpie, La Bohème, Tosca, Idomeneo, The Magic Flute, Fidelio, La Cenerentola, Rodelinda, Alcina, Rinaldo, Les Boreades, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Prima la Musica, War and Peace, Acis & Galatea, The Marriage of Figaro, The Rake’s Progress, The Elixir of Love, Così fan tutte, anda semi-staged production of Schubert’s Winterreise.

On the concert platform he has worked with such conductors as Sir Roger Norrington, Nicholas McGegan, Trevor Pinnock, William Christie, and Robert King, appearing in The Creation, the St. Matthew and St. John Passions, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Saul, and L’Allegro, Vivaldi’s Senna festeggiante, Scarlatti’s St. Cecilia Vespers, Haydn’s Seven Last Words, Tippett’s Child of Our Time, Purcell’s King Arthur and The Fairy Queen, and Charpentier’s David et Jonathas. His recordings include La Senna festeggiante with Robert King and the King’s Consort (Hyperion), Partenope with Christian Curnyn (Chandos), and Campra’s Grands Motets with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants (Virgin Veritas).

Engagements this season include the roles of Cold Genius, Aeolus, and Comus in Purcell’s King Arthur with Mark Morris for English National Opera and Cal Performances, Publio in La clemenza di Tito for English National Opera, Alidoro in La Cenerentola for Welsh National Opera, Mozart’s Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis, Handel’s Belshazzar with Philharmonia Baroque under McGegan, and tours with the Gabrieli Consort, King’s Consort, and Academy of Ancient Music.
